Why Did Peter Deny Jesus?

Peter denied Jesus because of fear and human weakness, despite previously insisting that he would never deny Him. Jesus had warned Peter about the coming temptation.

Biblical explanation

Peter confidently said: “Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended” (). Jesus responded: “Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice” (). When Jesus was arrested, Peter followed from a distance. Three times people identified him as one of Jesus' followers, and three times Peter denied knowing Him. After the third denial: “And Peter remembered the word of Jesus… And he went out, and wept bitterly” (). Yet Jesus later restored Peter. In , Jesus three times asks Peter whether he loves Him and then entrusts him with caring for His sheep. Peter's failure was serious, but it was not the end of his story. His repentance and restoration demonstrate that failure does not have to be final when a person turns back to Christ.
