After Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, Jesus spoke of building His church and gave Peter the keys of the kingdom (). Peter did exercise visible leadership, especially in the opening chapters of Acts. Yet Jesus later gave the authority to bind and loose to the wider body of disciples (), and He rejected attempts among the apostles to establish worldly rank (). The New Testament calls Christ the head of the church () and describes the church as built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone (). Peter also called himself a fellow elder and identified Christ as the Chief Shepherd ().
