Jesus found a fig tree with leaves but no fruit: “For he found nothing but leaves” (). He then said: “No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever” (). The next day the disciples saw that the tree had withered. The event occurs in the context of Jesus' cleansing of the temple. The fig tree therefore functions as a living symbol. Israel's religious leaders possessed an outward appearance of religion but were failing to produce the fruits God required. Jesus had already used similar imagery: “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire” (). The lesson is not about Jesus irrationally becoming angry with a tree. It is a prophetic sign concerning fruitlessness and judgment. The fig tree was used symbolically. The surrounding events strongly connect the sign with Israel's spiritual condition and the rejection of God's Messiah.
