Peter told Ananias: “Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?” (). Peter then explained that the property and money belonged to Ananias before the gift. The sin was not that he kept some money. The sin was that he falsely represented what he had given. Peter told Sapphira: “How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?” (). Both died. The result was fear throughout the church: “And great fear came upon all the church” (). The account emphasizes deliberate deception, hypocrisy, and lying to God. It does not teach that every lie receives immediate physical death as its judgment today.
