When the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out and touched the Ark: “And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error” (). At first this can appear shocking. But the earlier instructions concerning the Ark are important. The Ark was to be carried by the Levites using poles. specifically warned that they must not touch the holy things. The problem was therefore not merely that Uzzah touched the Ark accidentally. Israel had transported the Ark in a manner contrary to God's instructions. David later recognized the problem: “For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order” (). The biblical account presents Uzzah's death as a serious judgment connected with treating God's holiness casually and disregarding His explicit instructions.
