Biblical explanation
The Gospels repeatedly describe demons as real spiritual beings. Jesus encountered people possessed by demons and cast them out (; ). The New Testament also distinguishes demons from ordinary human sickness. says: “He cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick.” Demons recognize Jesus' identity. In , a demon calls Him “the Holy One of God.” James also says: “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” (). Demons therefore possess knowledge and intelligence, but their knowledge does not produce submission to God. Scripture clearly teaches the existence and activity of demons. It does not give us a detailed classification system describing different ranks or types of demons. does describe different expressions of spiritual opposition, but we should not build elaborate demonology beyond what Scripture reveals.
