Biblical explanation
Matthew says: “And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself” (). Acts says: “And falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out” (). The accounts can be understood as describing different aspects of the same death. Judas had betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. . After Jesus was condemned, Judas experienced remorse: “I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood” (). He returned the money but did not turn to Christ for forgiveness. Scripture clearly records Judas's betrayal, remorse, death, and replacement among the apostles. It does not give us a complete psychological explanation of Judas's final spiritual condition.
