Biblical explanation

Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan together. Then: “Behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven” (). The event was witnessed by Elisha, who saw Elijah disappear from view. Elijah's translation was extraordinary. Unlike ordinary human death, Scripture explicitly says he was taken to heaven. Elijah also appears with Moses during the Transfiguration: “And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him” (). This is significant because Moses had died and been resurrected, while Elijah had been translated without dying. Scripture explicitly says Elijah was taken to heaven. His experience was exceptional and should not be used to establish a general rule that all people go immediately to heaven when they die.
