Biblical explanation
The clean and unclean distinction appears as early as Noah, long before the ceremonial laws given through Moses. Leviticus later gives detailed instruction about which animals were considered clean for food, and the New Testament never presents unclean animals as newly healthy or spiritually beneficial to eat. Passages sometimes used to erase the distinction are better read in context as addressing human traditions, Gentile inclusion, or food offered to idols rather than redefining unclean animals as clean. Christians are not saved by diet, but caring for the body as God's temple makes food choices part of grateful stewardship.
