Biblical explanation

Before Israel entered Canaan, God told Abraham: “The iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full” (). This indicates that judgment was delayed. The Canaanite nations were associated with practices including idolatry, sexual immorality, child sacrifice, and other abominations. Deuteronomy warns Israel: “For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD” (). The judgment was therefore not presented as ethnic hatred. Israel was also warned that if it copied these practices, the land would “spue” Israel out as well. . The Bible also records examples of Canaanites responding to God differently. Rahab, a Canaanite woman, believed and was spared. ; 6:22-25. The biblical explanation centers on judgment for wickedness, not racial superiority. The same God who judged Canaan warned Israel that persistent rebellion would bring judgment upon Israel too.
