Biblical explanation
The Bible uses the language of turning to describe conversion. Peter told the people, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted” (). Paul described his mission as calling people “to turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God” (). Conversion therefore involves a change of allegiance. It begins with God's grace and the work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told Nicodemus that the Spirit gives new birth (). Conversion also affects conduct. Paul told the Ephesians that those who learned Christ should “put off” the former manner of life and “put on the new man” (). This means conversion is more than changing religious affiliation. A person may identify with Christianity outwardly without experiencing genuine spiritual transformation. The converted person begins learning to think, speak, and live according to God's will.
