Biblical explanation

God told Joshua: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed” (). Isaiah records God's promise: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee” (). The New Testament says: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (). At the same time, Scripture repeatedly commands the “fear of the LORD.” This means reverence, awe, and submission to God rather than terror that drives a person away from Him.
