Why Doesn't God Answer My Prayers?

The Bible gives several reasons a prayer may not receive the answer we expect, including God's wisdom, wrong motives, unconfessed sin, lack of faith, and requests that do not agree with God's will. Yet Scripture also teaches that God hears His children even when His answer is not what they expected.

Biblical explanation

John writes: “If we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” (). James warns: “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss” (). The Bible also gives examples of faithful people whose prayers were answered differently than they wanted. Paul prayed repeatedly for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed. Instead, Christ answered: “My grace is sufficient for thee” (). Jesus Himself prayed in Gethsemane: “Not my will, but thine, be done” (). A delayed or different answer does not necessarily mean God has ignored a prayer. Scripture teaches that God's wisdom and will are greater than ours.
