The fact that Jesus prayed does not prove that He was not divine. Scripture simultaneously teaches His divinity and His distinction from the Father. Jesus prayed frequently. He prayed at His baptism (), withdrew to pray privately (), prayed before choosing the apostles (), and prayed before His crucifixion (). His prayer in Gethsemane reveals His submission: “not my will, but thine, be done” (). Jesus also spoke with the Father about the glory they shared before the world existed. In He prayed, “glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was” (). explains that Christ humbled Himself and took the form of a servant. describes Him offering prayers and supplications during His earthly life. Jesus therefore prayed because He truly became human and lived in dependence upon the Father while accomplishing His mission. His prayer life also provides an example for His followers. If Jesus regularly prayed, His disciples should likewise cultivate continual communion with God.
