Why Are There So Many Wars in the Old Testament?

The Old Testament records wars for several different reasons. Some were judgments specifically commanded by God, some were defensive conflicts, and many were consequences of human sin. The Bible does not portray war itself as God's ideal for humanity.

War enters the biblical story because humanity is fallen. God originally created humanity for peace, but sin produced violence. says: “The earth was filled with violence.” Some Old Testament wars were specifically connected with God's judgment. Others occurred because Israel was attacked by surrounding nations. The Bible also records wars that God did not approve of.
