Where Do You Go When You Die?

The Bible describes the dead as returning to the dust and remaining in the grave until the resurrection. Scripture does not teach that every person immediately goes to heaven or to a place of eternal torment at death.

Job asked, “If a man die, shall he live again?” and looked forward to a future resurrection (). David wrote that in death there is no remembrance of God and asked, “who will give thee thanks in the grave?” (). similarly says the dead have no knowledge of what is happening under the sun. The New Testament maintains this resurrection-centered hope. Paul did not tell grieving believers that their deceased relatives were already living in heaven. Instead, he directed them toward Christ's return: “The Lord himself shall descend from heaven… and the dead in Christ shall rise first” (). Jesus likewise spoke of a future resurrection of those in the graves (). Therefore, the biblical picture is: Death → unconscious rest in the grave → resurrection → eternal life or final judgment.
