Revelation calls Babylon: “Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth” (). Babylon is portrayed as a woman sitting upon a beast (). She influences kings and nations: “the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her” (). describes her worldwide commercial and political influence and says: “all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication” (). The symbolic language indicates that Babylon represents more than the ancient city alone. Its characteristics must be compared with Daniel, Revelation, and Old Testament passages about Babylon. Revelation does not simply say, “Babylon is [name of a modern organization].” The identification must be based on the characteristics given in Scripture. Babylon is associated with spiritual unfaithfulness, deception, alliance with earthly powers, opposition to God's people, and worldwide influence.
