Peter says baptism saves, but immediately clarifies that he is not referring merely to washing physical dirt from the body. The emphasis is on the believer's appeal to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism therefore should never be treated as an alternative to faith. It is the biblical outward expression of identification with Christ's death and resurrection (). Scripture clearly commands baptism and closely connects it with conversion. It does not teach that water itself has magical power to forgive sin independently of faith in Christ.
