Are women permitted to serve as pastors or elders according to scripture?

Scripture reserves the governing and teaching office of pastor, elder, or overseer for qualified men. This distinction does not diminish women, who share equal worth in Christ and are called to vital ministries of prayer, discipleship, teaching other women and children, evangelism, mercy, hospitality, and service according to their spiritual gifts.

Biblical explanation

The New Testament uses elder and overseer for the church office entrusted with shepherding, doctrinal teaching, and spiritual oversight. When Paul gives its qualifications, he describes the elder or overseer as “the husband of one wife” who leads his household faithfully and is able to teach (; ). He also grounds his instruction that women not exercise governing teaching authority over men in the assembled church in the order of creation, rather than merely in a temporary local problem (). Taken together, these passages teach that qualified men are to serve as pastors or elders. This role distinction does not make men more valuable or spiritually superior. Men and women are equally created in God's image, equally saved in Christ, and equally recipients of the Holy Spirit and His gifts (; ; ). Scripture honors women who prayed, prophesied, supported gospel ministry, practiced hospitality, served the church, instructed other women and children, and helped explain truth in appropriate settings, as Priscilla did alongside Aquila (; ; ). The church therefore should not suppress women's gifts, but encourage their broad and indispensable ministry while honoring the distinct pastoral and elder order established in Scripture.
